Visual art from the Renaissance period in Italy has always mesmerized me. Sandro Botticelli being one of my favourite artists from this era, I really wanted to incorporate him. Two of his most popular paintings are "The Birth of Venus" and "Primavera". I used these two paintings as my main inspiration while simultaneously adding my own unique touch. All of the components of the outfit are inspired from one of the two paintings. "The Birth of Venus" features a woman in a white dress with a blue flower pattern on it. The base of my dress is completely inspired by this. Flowers and vines wrap around the woman's waist, I incorporated this by putting flowers on my waist as well. "Primavera" also features a woman in a white floral dress, who is holding flowers that appear as if they could fall out of her hand at any moment. The flowers on my dress are going downwards to represent this. Additionally, That woman has flowers crowning her head, while the one next to her has flowers and vines going into her mouth. To represent this I created a flower crown that comes down and wraps into my hair. The bouquet in my hands is also to reference the flowers this woman has. "Primavera" has 3 figures in gold and translucent garments. I wanted the gold rimming of my dress to be a reference to them. Finally I put a gold flower on the center of my chest to mirror the one on Venus's (the woman in the center) chest. I added enough of my own personal touch to the dress, so that the references are not very apparent and more like a secret, so it feels more special. Lastly, I used really vibrant colours in my photos to make them have a sort of painting like feel.

My suit is a tribute to the late Eddie Van Halen. The jacket and matching shoes are based off his famous “Frankenstrat” guitar design. The image on the back of the coat is a portrayal of the legendary guitarist. The bottoms are designed to look like skinny leather pants, while giving a “ripped jean” look, made from the string inside the tape. I posed with a custom guitar I built (not made of Duck Tape) and shirtless under the jacket, as any classic rocker would.

Hello everyone! I am very excited to be participating in this year's contest. After many prototypes, failed designs and not so good inspiration I created a dress that is inspired by the past the the future. What I mean by that is that the main dress is rainbow and black ruffles, going for a more modern style, as well as representing how the future is not always going to be bright, nor will it always be dark. Then the overskirt represents the past with the early 1800s style as well on how it is always with us, it is just up to us do decide if we let it dull our future or we let go and embrace it. Also in the process of making this dress I bought out three different Walmart for their Rainbow Ombre tape.

I was inspired to make this dress after growing up watching Disney and Barbie movies. I always loved the big dramatic magical dresses and I was so excited to get the opportunity to make my own. I wanted to show a bit of my childhood through this dress by combining both ideas to make a dress that looked as if butterflies had landed on it.

After learning about this competition through my teacher, I was at the store and saw this beautiful blue tie dye tape. I decided I wanted to do a design that lets the natural pattern of the tape shine. With the same tape at the bottom of the pants as well as the main color pop of the corset it shines with its similar looks to crystals. I wanted the tux to have dress features without being a dress, i wanted more of a casual work outfit mix runway model twist. As I added everything together the blue made me think of rain so I decided to add sun decorations. It reminded me of how you may be sad on a sunny day but that doesn't mean you cant look good while you do it.

All my life I wished for a masquerade ball-themed prom because of the shows and movies I watched as a kid, but sadly that never happened for any of my proms because of school prom restrictions. With this scholarship, I realized I could finally make the child in me happy and make a dress for a masquerade-themed prom, so I jumped on the chance to participate in it.

One concept I have always been intrigued by is taking the ordinary and showing how it can easily be shifted into extraordinary. Dandelions, though considered a pest, demonstrate a constant presence regardless of society’s efforts to suppress their existence. They’re able to persevere even when their flowery tops are cut off, and are known to sprout even from just their roots. They are unapologetically present, as an affront to society’s desire for evenly mown grass. This is the emotion I hoped to portray from the cutting of more than a hundred duck tape dandelions, and I am incredibly happy with the way it turned out.

My dress is inspired by theatre quick change concepts where you have one look, then it transforms into another. I decided on a floral theme in the end to incorporate a personal touch, adding in the birth flowers delphinium and water lily to transform to two different looks.

I wanted to create a dress that was elegant, and had a pop of color. The bow on the front is meant to resemble a flower. I made this dress twice, as the tape kept sticking together, as seen in my photos, due to the fact that this was my first time doing this contest. I know it doesn't look like the best thing in the world but at least the thought was there.

My inspiration for this was definitely bows! I was initially making the sketch for my own prom dress, until I decided to use it for this. I knew I wanted to incorporate bows, so I designed this with the upper bodess as a giant bow like shape. I added the Iridescent as a pop for this piece for it to really catch your eye!

When I embark on a new project, my goal is always to outdo my previous work. To me, the mark of excellence in any creation is determined by its medium, size, and concept. When I set out to design my latest dress, I was determined to exceed my own expectations on all fronts. The first challenge was coming up with a unique concept. With the impending arrival of the warmer season, I knew that flower-themed dresses would flood the scene. In order to make my cascading flower concept stand out, I decided to give it a winter-toned color palette. But that was just the beginning. The initial idea for the dress was a flowing ballgown adorned with blooming flowers. However, as I worked on it, I found myself inspired to incorporate a new, unexplored medium - mosaic. This sparked a new vision for the dress: "A dress that looks like the flowers are emerging from a mosaic." With only a week to bring this vision to life, I was undeterred. As I neared the completion of the gown, I felt compelled to extend the train, adding hand-made tape flowers one by one. It was a daunting task, wearing multiple hats - designer, florist, cleanup crew, manager, and makeshift seamstress. But the exhilarating challenge of this adhesive-filled marathon was worth every moment. Working with duct tape presented me with a myriad of opportunities to express my creativity in ways I had never imagined. From its sturdy fibers that enhanced the structural integrity of the garment to its incredibly strong adhesive, I had no doubt that this dress would withstand anything, from a long evening event to the demands of everyday life.

The solar eclipse inspired this creation. The night sky is typically scattered with stars and a beam of moonlight, but the dress represents the strip of the moon against the color rays of the sun. The dress is meant to represent the juxtaposition of sunlight and the moon--an explosion of color interrupted by a white tail of moonlight. I created the dress by using layers of tissue paper and trash sacks to create a pattern for the dress. Then, I used duct tape to layer over the patterns and created intricate designs with different colors of duct tape.

The Día de los Muertos-inspired garment is a colorful and eye-catching item that honors Mexico's rich cultural customs. Let me clarify what Día de los Muertos is for those who do not know. Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a colorful and festive tradition celebrated in Mexico. Families and communities gather on Nov 1st to pay tribute to and remember their departed loved ones. Día de los Muertos is an occasion to celebrate life. It is thought that deceased people's souls are reconnected with their relatives around this time. Families make altars, or ofrendas, decorated with their loved ones' favorites. The Mexican culture honors and loves the deceased. The dress's back is embellished with a complex and vibrant design, while its black foundation represents the spirit of sadness and remembering. Traditional Día de los Muertos elements like sugar skulls, marigolds, papel picado, and pan de muerto are featured in the design, effectively conveying the occasion's joyous atmosphere. The mermaid-style shape of the dress creates a refined and feminine profile. With its striking orange and black outline, the outfit is meant to imitate a monarch butterfly. The monarch butterfly is significant to this occasion due to the long-held notion that butterflies represent our ancestors who are visiting the afterlife. The garment is a celebration of life and a memorial to loved ones who have passed away. It combines a traditional pattern with a modern shape. It is an art piece that can be worn, perfectly capturing the essence and allure of Día de los Muertos. My favorite part of my culture inspired this piece because it always reminds me that we are all mortal and instead of fearing death like most in the world do, we should embrace it as a part of life. With this piece, I pay homage to my great-grandmother, my Nina whose love and memories I shall always cherish. Thank you Nina for showing me the love and care that every child deserves.

My dress was inspired by my love for fantasy! Since 9th grade I had an ongoing joke with my family that I would show up to prom wearing a suit of armor and carrying a sword; Getting to make this dress and incorporating my love for fantasy gave me a chance to create my dream prom outfit with a twist! This look includes 3 separate skirt layers, a corseted/armor top, forearm bracers, boots, a necklace, hair clip, shoulder armor and a purse all carefully crafted with duct tape! Metallic details and blue patterning added an extra layer of depth and pulled the piece beautifully together! To conclude, through hours of creativity and work, I brought my vision to life! I got to see my outfit come together and I could see just how far I had come. I'm proud of myself for taking on the Stuck at Prom scholarship contest!

A few years ago, I decided I wanted to go into fashion design. I got into sketching out different abstract designs, and new style ideas. One of the first ever designs I made, was this dress. I thought it would be such a cool concept, but I had no way or reason to execute it. When I heard about the Duct Tape scholarship, I started sketching up different Duct Tape based ideas. A few days later I was flipping through my sketchbook, and I found my old designs. But in particular, I found this one. I changed a few things when I drew it back up to make it more functional, but I kept the same premise as before. I love the idea that I am using the same design that got me into fashion as I now pursue a career in it.

My love of 19th-century French ballgowns inspired the design of my dress. I adore the regalness, the elegance, the frills, the big poofy skirts, and the sheer beauty that these types of dresses have. I was determined to make one with my own personal touch; something that was big and elegant, but still mine. I started by studying multiple images of 19th-century French ballgowns and designed a dress with common trends I saw in my research. From the beginning of this project, I knew I wanted three things; one was that I wanted this dress to be absolutely decked out in ridiculous detail, the second was that I wanted to challenge myself and use only duct tape as much as possible, and the third being that I wanted my love for France and French heritage to really show through the design. To do all these things, I worked relentlessly day and night to put as much detail and as much pure duct tape as I could onto the dress. For my third goal, I chose to use a range of different blues so that I could create a beautiful ombre effect throughout the dress. This was done to represent the stunning Mediterranean waters in coastal France. The second design choice to make the dress more personal was to add flower motifs throughout the dress and accessories. My love for flowers can be found through my clothes, room decor, and especially my flower doodles on all my schoolwork. One of the flowers I chose for my dress was roses since they are very significant to French culture and literature. Never once did my passion and willpower for this project falter, and I am proud of the unique and beautiful dress I created.

I have always admired how dedicated monarch butterflies are to their migration and I hope to channel that into college next year as I navigate traveling between college and home for the next 4 years. I also love dual meanings and it has been so much fun sketching and planning out this monarch(y) dress! The monarch butterfly aspects of this dress include the 2-layered skirt that looks like wings and the top, which looks like the body of the butterfly. The monarchy/queen aspects of this outfit include the collar of the top (inspired by the Queen of Hearts), the lining of the wings in the skirt (meant to look like the inverse colors of the fur lining of a royal robe) and the newspaper wig (inspired by Queen Marie Antoinette).

I love nature so I wanted to include it in my design. I originally was going to do something flowery but then the idea to do a blue monarch butterfly hit me and here we are! I find their pattern and flight mesmerizing so why not spread my wings and make a design based of a blue monarch.
