My inspiration was largely the natural world. I have been a member of Scouts BSA since I was in first grade, so the outdoors has played a large part in my personal development. In the creation of this outfit, I thought back to trips out to national parks, backcountry treks, and even visits to one of my favorite places - Longwood Gardens. This created the idea of a floral pattern for me.

I really appreciate the beauty of peacocks, I used the iconic peacock tail as my inspiration and really love the way the feathers lay. I used duck tapes in varied colors and textures to make the designs on the feathers and bodice. I was able to make the duck tape drape in a way that looks very natural. While it’s not perfect it is very, very close.

Most queer people often miss out on their prom or can't fully express themselves because of a wide variety of reasons, whether that be their community or themselves. So through this competition I wanted to create an outfit that acts as a vessel of expression while also challenging myself. I wanted to only use duct tape and no fabric at all. To create the dress structure, I covered parchment paper and tissue paper with strips of white tape. For the headpiece, I used cardboard and duct tape exclusively. As an artist, I always try to make a statement or something that can uplift others. The headpiece displays the words “Just Maurice”, this is my true name, the mirror in the center acts as a “portal” that one can envision themselves in, seeing their true authentic selves. By using white tape for the majority of the outfit, it acted almost like a canvas, which allowed me to use my love of painting into play. The use of nude tones on the base dress acts as “skin”, showing the feeling of being comfortable in one's own skin. The splashes of rainbow ombréd on the ruffles and pleats are a nod to the pride flag but also how colorful life could be as we continue to live on. The arm chains show hope in the restrictions that some of us have to face, acting as a reminder that we are brave and capable of loving ourselves.

My dress was inspired by the theme of vampires but in a modern spring style. I created this by piecing together mutiple rows of black and red tape together to form the bottom and did the same for the top using only the black tape then, tapped it together to create the dress together.

Inspired by the Knight's Code of Chivalry, I wanted to create a dress that appears both powerful and regal. Although these codes are not commonly mentioned in this day and age, I believe the rules are still excellent guidelines for how we should live our lives: protecting the innocent, living with honesty and respect, and exhibiting self-discipline. As a lover of anything fantasy and fashion, I spent several hours experimenting with various designs and techniques that would bloom into something majestic. I poured most of my time into creating fine details such as Duck Tape chainmail, emblems, and over 100 beads. I even went as far as to make false nails with Duck Tape! Although it is not a typical prom dress, It captures me better than any mall store dress ever could.

I was inspired by my love for the Impressionist movement. I wanted to translate the movements depiction of water and air through blocky and abrupt paint strokes. I hoped to look as if I was being consumed by the art work.

The inspiration for my dress was Van Gogh’s starry night as well as the fashion during that time period. I began by researching and sketching a design. The unique things about this dress are the corset back and the slashed sleeves that reveal starry night inside. To make the starry night effect I had to cut hundreds of little strips of tape. This dress took many hours, but it was a lot of fun and I am very proud of how it turned out.

I’ll be attending the University of MO Columbia (or Mizzou) and their colors are black and gold. That’s what inspired my tux design for the Duck Brand Stuck at Prom contest. I guess I got into the school spirit early and I’m already a Mizzou Tiger! Putting this tux together was a lot of work but it was worth it in the end. I’m excited for my upcoming college experience. Thanks to Duck Tape for this fun contest and opportunity.

My inspiration for the dress was the four elements and how they all work with one another. I made the flames the largest because fire tends to be the most known. However, I wanted the fire aspect to be the most put together and clean part of the dress compared to the earth, water and wind element. Most of the time, fire is considered the most dangerous and ugly so I wanted to show a different side of it. Where fire was beautiful and the rain, vines, and clouds were messy and chaotic like in nature.

My dress was inspired by my love for arts and crafts. Ever since I can remember I loved to work with my hands whether that is origami, recreating something from a show, or bringing one of my own designs to life. One of the main reasons I chose to enter into this contest was to challenge myself and my skills to see what I am cable of. Ironically, the first design that I remember making were house slippers made of yellow felt and neon orange duck tape so this project felt like everything was coming in full circle. I wanted my dress to show the different versions of crafts so the first layer of the dress was inspired by origami. Origami is a craft that everyone has done at least once in their life as it is one of the simplest crafts you can make seeing that it requires no skill or experience. To represent it I pleated the dress to depict folds in origami and I added some of the most popular origami sculptures on top. The second layer of my dress was inspired by fabric and fashion. Making outfits and fashion pieces is something that requires experience and skill so I wanted to include this to contrast the origami layer. I recently started playing around with fabric and the color I chose to start with was purple so I wanted a part of that to be represented in this dress. The last layer of my dress was inspired by a ruler, or my measuring tape which was the most useful tool when creating this project.

The beginning of this dress had many inspirations. The size and drama of 18th Century French Rococo, the femininity and frills of the porcelain dolls I collect, the ridiculousness of Barbie's princess outfits, the monochromatic haunting colors and shapes of Tim Burton's artwork, the vintage yet edgy aesthetic of steampunk. But there was one inspiration, one goal above all others. I wanted this dress to be big. I wanted it to achieve what I could not, what I never managed on stage or at my own prom. I wanted the inability for it to fit through door frames, I wanted the inconvenience that came with an insane amount of glamor. I wanted the silhouette of a barbie in a cake-dress and the impracticality of a cartoon. Nothing brings me more joy than a large skirt, the way fabric flares out just so, the cutting shape it makes, the attention it draws. Making a dress as big as this had been a dream for awhile, but with the weight and gravity obeying attributes of fabric I never had the chance. After a few tests with duct tape though, the stiffness and weight gave way for my dream to come true, to make the biggest dress possible. I think I came through with this goal, making both a large, cartoony dress and matching my art almost perfectly.

My inspiration was a mermaid. I have an obsession with florals, the sea, and the night sky. I incorporated elements to look like a mermaids tail, a rose corset detail, and the allusion of northern lights from the bottom as well. I also love fantasy clothing which was the inspiration for the corset top.

The main inspiration for my design came from this year's 2024 Met Gala theme: "The Garden of Time." The idea of the eternal beauty of nature resonated with me as I began creating my design. I believe that nature will outlive civilization, and that is the only truly everlasting thing. I channelled this idea into my dress with the focal point being the white flower in a "landscape of disintegrating black". The flower is a beacon representing the steadfastness of nature and beauty even in the face of tragedy.

Inspired by the vibrant colors of nature, I created a rainforest prom dress. My base design was a traditional green tube dress, but my ultimate goal was to incorporate a variety of shades, vegetation, and animals. Every time you look at my dress you will discover something new. Look hard. Do you see 5 amazing creatures? Hint: I’m the 5th! I love nature, I love this dress and now I really love Duck Tape! Thank you!

Between graduating high school, preparing for college, and moving locations, this time of my life has been all about change. When I heard about this contest, I knew I wanted to do something different with it, which is why I chose to base my design off of moths. The life of a moth consists of major changes, and all of them mean a new stage of life and new oppertunities. I hope to channel some of that willingness to change in my own life, starting with putting this tux out there and learning new things every day.

I was inspired by sweet aroma of flowers in spring and the functionality of the duct tapes for my outfit. The black gown with a half constructed floral apron skirt seems innocent playfulness in elegant craftsmanship made entirely out of duct tape. Once I aimed to prove that nothing is impossible to create and even the most ordinary objects can become unique. In the end, it was not the easiest outfit to make, but it was indeed fulfilling. I attached the front part of the gown first by picking and laying strips of black duct tape in the manner that will give it strength while at the same time being comfortable. For the additional floral designs, the duct tapes with multiple shades of colors and cut into petal forms were pasted in an artistic and lively floral fashion. To finalize this look, I created a Hermès Kelly inspired mini bag and made this using duct tape as well. It also made the outfit classy bringing together the whole-body outfit nicely. Another new item was my dog’s outfit since it was made of duct tape too so he could join me in the photo. That is why I chose him to match my theme; it was nice to be able to incorporate him in the creativity of this project.
