How to Make a Duck Tape® Rose

Ducktivity provided by Duck® Brand

What's more beautiful than a rose? A rose made of Duck Tape. There's no dirt and no thorns to deal with. Plus, you don't ever have to water it.

Give a hand-made Duck Tape rose to someone special and he or she will be stuck to you like...let's just say it'll be appreciated.

Supplies and Tools
  • •Duck® brand Duct Tape,•Straw   Optional Supplies and Tools:,•Scissors

Directions

Step 1

Cover your straw in Duck Tape®. A recommended way is to roll the straw lengthwise across the Duck Tape® with the sticky side up. 

Step 2

Then, tear or cut several strips of Duck Tape® measuring 2 in. each.

Step 3

Fold one edge over itself, sticky side up, leaving some stickiness on the side and bottom. 

Step 4

Take the parallel edge and fold it over to make a triangle, leaving only the bottom of the strip sticky.

Step 5

Roll the petals around the top of the straw from step 1.

Step 6

Repeat step 5, slightly overlapping the petals and keeping the tips of your petals even. Continue until you’ve reached the desired size. 

Step 7

For the leaves under the rose, repeat steps 2-4 with the same color as the stem. Wrap those pieces around the stem at the base of the flower to cover up the tape edge.

No, it's not too hard-- I've made them before. However, it takes a LOT of petals to get a nice, full look. When I make duct tape flowers I don't use straws because I consider them too flimsy. I usually use a floral stick (found at most craft stores). You could use a pen, too, and make a pretty little rose pen.

I make these all the time, only insted of a straw I unwind papercilps, and build off of that. I do it because you can posistion them any way, make leaves to branch off the stem and even make corsages. My friends have fallen in love with them and I make about 7 a day. Each friend gives me $2.00 for it, even when I tell them it is a gift...

This is cool and it so easy. I might make a rose for my friends lol:)

this is a little more time consuming then I thought and it takes a TON of tape 2 get a really nice full look

i found a rad way to make duck tape flowers, somtimes it looks like a tulip or a rose, kinda cool. and for the stem you can just roll up the duck tape and wrap it tightly and its sturdy and bendable.

it takes a little time and you have to practice but other wise it is the best

I love roses, rose is my middle name. Making it isn't hard at all. At the end it looks really beautiful and you apreciate the time you spent to make it

I did the petals in sort of layers, and in each new layer I raised it a bit. It took less duct tape and still looks really good.

I love making these, but instead of using a straw I like using a pen so you can write with it=) All my friends love them!

I love duck tape roses. They arent as hard as they look. All of my friends always want me to make duck tape pens for them. Try making them with different combinations of colors! MissDuckTape543

i like the craft but the directions were hard to understand so i youtubed it and the was a good video on it. i put the flowers on pens and sold them to people! they were pretty popular and i sold a few :)

This project looks really cool, especially considering all the different colors you could use for the rose (and maybe even the stem would look interesting in one of the camo prints)...I wonder if the Totally Tie Dye purple would make a neat looking rose. I'd definitely want to try black! It does seem like it'd be a bit time consuming, however, and I might consider replacing the straw with something sturdier (I like the pen idea suggested here!). Good luck to all those who try this!

I just made 2 of these and it was so fun! I made them on a pen and a pencil instead of a straw because they are less flimsy. They sound a lot harder to make than they really are..... *peace, love, duct tape*

Cool this is simple and fun. My rose doesn't look like a rose but it looks like a flower. i just don't get the folding the parallel side thing oh well i mad it work :) I attached it to a pen i'm giving it to my mummy <3 I used blue and the zig-zag zebra duct tape. I have to try this! I have always wanted to try but never got the instructions until i read it!!!!

This was actually really easy! It seems like it would be really difficult and would take forever but I made a small one in like 10 minutes. Its really fun and I just used blue and silver so you can use any colors you have.

Nice and lovely, and hopefully easy. The look of it just makes me want to make one right away!

its really not as hard as it looks the ones i make are about twice as big and take half the time theyre really fun and sell on ebay for one-two dollars each

i just roll up some duck tape probably not very cost affective but its less flimsy than straws and lasts longer

This has been on my to do list for a while now. Broke down and invested in the tape of mi choice..... Made the first two and just loved them....being the artzee fartzee i am, i rounded my tips and slightly creased the edges and put leave's on them they came out way coooool. these look EXACTLY like the ones I make! these are gorgeous and if you want yours to look like the picture, make 50 petals for a full look and also make sure that all the petals are even before you fold them. when you stick the petals on, check to see if it's level. run your finger around the top and if you feel a straight pointy path then great! but if you feel a bumpy pointy path then keep trying! good luck <3333 :)

really fun! when i saw it i grabbed my duck tape and duck tape scissors and got to work. but when i was looking for a straw and couldn't find one, I used a pencil and took the rose off the pencil. really wish i could find how to make a vase :p

I seen this done many ways....miniatures are just as fun....all of mine are made on bic pens or papermate pens cause when the ink runs out just replace the writing tip portion of the pen and yer ready to go again. Men and women have asked me for ball game team colored ones and mastered making them mid size so they are not so large and bulky........still having fun makin these roses.......i know yall will too for those of you whom have not tried these yet.

great craft but it takes alot of duct tape. its very fun! i make mine different though. i just wrap them all around the stem then you dont have to worry about getting the sticky parton the first petal and the stem:) just a tip.

This is a great craft, I make them all the time because they are so easy, paper clips and sticks work best for me

For a nice, full-ish, it takes about 48 petals. It's really easy, though, and most of my friends were impressed when I made my first one--which wasn't that great. I did spirals a few times using two different colours, which is super easy! :) ~Thanks~

These are awesome but if you are going to make one then dont buy your tape at hobby lobby they r ripping u off. you can get it much cheeper at kroger or walmart or target. i recomend target because they have a pretty good selection.

Ok Ladies, I have lost it---when i made the first few, i handed them out at work so that our pens do not get ripped off. But since then as stated before...i have men asking for these pens as well with the flames on the out side. Mastered small, medium and large- to outrageous. Then i had a possible order for 55 pens before the 10th of February-so i invested in over two hundred dollars of Duck Duct tape.....the lady flaked on the order...cause she didn't like my prices. Was only charging 3.50 ea for the pen. This is really hard to put a price on it. So i have just been making them and giving them to folks i come across in life to see them smile(in my community). If they want more i charge them 3.50 and quite a few are takers. I just want to make a up the rest of my duct tape supply and bee done with it....but occasionally you get those whom fear trying and will buy them. I plan on decoring my house with them...they never die and they are sooooo colorful. Heck it's even gotten to where i could set up training sessions with folks of all ages to teach this to others whom are bored and say they arent creative. I just tell them JUST DO IT! Awaken the creative sleeper within! Everyone possess creativeness. The joy it brings just to see others smile off of something so simple----the thought of just giving something for nothing in return...Is Awesome too. More folks need to smile. These Pens bring a lot of Smile's in my neighborhood. This is what keeps me a making them. For those smile's and teach others to do the same and make a little cash when needed. These instructions are really hard to understand between steps 3 and 4, but this is what you do. When you are on step 3 fold the strip how you would if you were making a paper airplane.

I have made 4 of these roses today and they are sooo awesome!!! I was super surprised when i was done and how good it looked.

the most it needs is 50 pedals to make it have a full flower. They just didn't put in one crucial information to make it. The same with rounded flowers

When I saw this I thought tha it looked really hard. But ehrn I tried it it was x-tremely easy. I love them. I did a hot pink and zebra pen and it looks super awsome

These look cool. The flowers I make are a little different. I have seen pictures of these online, but I have never found instructions on how to make them.

Well I think it looks great except for the fact that you made it sound extremely hard. Making a duct tape rose is one of the easiest ductivities ever and you made it sound like rocket science. Please make the directions a little easier for the people who don't have that good ability to read directions.

These are awesome and so easy to make!!!!! I make jumbo ones and let the customer choose the colors!!! I charge 5.00 for the pens and if you want the 5 refills 7.00. The flowers that I make with a paper clip stem are 3.00! I also make bracelets ($2.00)and necklaces ($2.50!I make wallets too($4.50)!!! Im in 5th grade and all the kids thank there fair prices!! This project stanks! I cant follow the instructions! At least I tried.

its fun and EASY so dont worry! the only thing is it takes up a ton of duct tape. its a good idea to give a gift to someone with some (duct tape) flowers in a vase :D

if you work in an office or write alot i suggest you make your flower with a pen instead of a straw....... MUCH MORE USEFUL! but overall the idea is pretty cool and special for ladies.

I love these roses! I make them all the time, and they aer not that hard once you get use to making them!

Its super easy I do 8 before I go to bed my friends got me started now I cant stop.I even have a whole network of selling pens . But I noticed some of the people I was selling to where selling them to others for a price as high as $10.00 so I stopped selling to them.

It's really super easy but you don't have to make the stem green or the flowers reall colors. Also make them on pens so you can write with them really cool no with pencils though cuz u can't sharpen it :)

i like the roses. i used a ink pen instead of a straw this way you got a ink pen to use with a rose on top.

I'm doing this project right now and it takes A LOT of petals, at first it is very complicated just saying.

Making it is super easy but instead of a straw I use a pen. A straw would bend and mess up the flower.

i made one like this but its a little skinnier so i wouldnt waste as much duck tape. i also like doing it on pens and spraying perfume on it so it smells. great project!!

it sounds hard i self taught my self on how to make roses a different way

its pretty easy actually it looks hard because of all the layers but they turn out good but the harder you tape them the better they come out but you also can switch colors and make it cooler and glitter spray makes them prettier :)

i've made one of these before and found that it gives it a cleaner look if you put a layer of leaves the color of the stem right at the base of the petals.

Super easy to make, yes ti takes FOREVER to make them but once you get into it the time goes by fast :) My friends love them and my mom uses them at work all the time

soooooooooooo easy!! i started my duck tape buisness 3 days ago and barely knew anything when i started. now me and my brother and sister learned how to make theses yesterday and we already filled up 3 vases and are going to sell them to our friends!! we tried using pens and they work much better!! way easier than it looks!! :)

Me and my sister make these. They are very easy, once you get the pattern down. We know exactly how many pedals we need and we put them on pens. Ten minutes to make it. We sell them for 5 dollars each and make so much more stuff. We have a professional business started! These pens are an amazing thing to us!

These are cool and i know how to make roses but step 7 sounds confusinf and that is not how i make my base.... hmmm.....

My friend made these. They seem really hard to make, but she says once you get the hang of it, they are super easy! I wanted to buy roses for everybody in my class (100 in total) but then thought it would cost, like, thousands. So, instead, on Valentines day, I will tape these to everybody's locker and have a post- it note saying, "You are a wonderful person!"

Love to make them!However this really is NOT hard at all you just need to get used to it. How I do it is I pick the colors and all that stuff and then I use a pattern with 2 colors across from each other so it would be like green blue green blue.I do this and once I ended up with the green a black lots of times and it looked super cool. i make roses all the time and a good thing to use for a sturdy stem is a wooden skewer! i roll dark green tape around it and it doesnt snap or anything. leaves can be a bit tricky tho

i say its not the awesomest but its ok

It seems easy enough. But it is pretty tricky to picture what is being said in the instructions. Pictures would help. I'm going to make one for the girl I like but use a pen or something. The straws are too flimsy.

This is amazing! If you work up, gradually make them go higher and higher, it doesn't take a lot of petals. I suggest that you use a pencil, floral stick, or pen, straws do not work. This is really easy and does not take a lot of time.

I make a Lot of duct tape roses. I started outmaking big ones but found that sometimes the weight of the tape causes the rose to start to fall apart so Now I usually just do 3 layers. The middle with 4 ting petals then 6 a little larger and then 6 more. Once n a while I add a few extra petals if it seems off-center. I use very stiff straws that I get from Dollar General. I also make leaves or buds on some of them. For a leaf, I make a little roll of the stem color and press flat with my hand then I have a piece of tape about 2 inches long. I use the flat roll as the stem placing it on one half of the tape then fold it onto itself and cut the leaf shape. Then I cut the the serrated edge. I stick it on the stem close to the top. I use the bright green for stems and sometimes I use the camouflague. That really looks neat@@@

It is a really nice flower... however i agree with some people its takes up a lot of duck tape and a lot of petals. for me a large pen like that would take a half an hour. there is better ways to make flowers... follow me!

Totally a five star easey but AWESOME craft! I love making these. i made one of a pen that had no ink so I put a piece of duct tape around the tip and when I took it off the tip accidentaly broke. I left it on my counter and all the ink I didn't know it had spilled everywhere and I didn't notice until the next morning. still make the all the time even if there is a giant black stain on my counter. :) 0_ ( I made duct tape!)

If this looks hard to you go to youtube and type in "how to make a duct tape rose" and look for the Duct tape brand kind or monkeysee videos. they are easier to understand.

I think roses are easy to make. I made one for the first time before I even knew about the instructions online. I didn't use a straw, I just made a tube out of duck tape. :)

So cool!!!! I use all diffrent patterns. They all make good roses. Even the collage themed ones. I use them in glass coke bottles to decorate my room, so pretty!!!!!!

We did these in art class....I used a pen in the place of the straw though. The straw is just too...flimsy. But I LOVED this project, and I'm so glad my teacher and I love duct tape! My best friend showed me how to make duct tape ballet flats :)

I've made these before. they seem hard at first but once you completely fail once the second time you perfect it and so on. It looks great. But I HATE the huge ones they just look horrible I prefer large medium small. I always do them on pens so I can show them off! I love my flower pens!

This is a very easy craft. I made a medium-sized rose in only ten minutes! It is much easier than it looks, plus this rose is hard to mess up on, so the first one I made looks perfect. I highly recommend if you have ten minutes to spare

I tried making one with my friend and i fell in love with the idea, so i bought some duck tape and tried to make one and i did! But one thing is that it takes a long time to do all those petals for the flower, it's really neat when you decorate the cap of the pen ( if you use pens)!

A lot of people say it's easy, others hard. So, I gave it a go. I'll admit, it's no 2-minute project. It takes time, and you need to craft each petal, so it takes patience. But it is by no means hard. It's definitely boring and repetitive, but the finished product is so nice, it's worth it several times over. Protip: Don't use a straw. If you use a pen, it's sturdier, and it's funtional too.

Great idea and all but to improve it you can shape the petals to be round by curving the edge which gives it a more realistic quality. Also if you wrap them a little looser it makes a fuller shape with less duck tape

ON STEP THREE AND FOUR she leaves out the to make the triangles you have to start out like you would with a paper airplane

I love to make these! This one girl in my class makes these and they looked so cool. I asked her how to do them and she wouldn't tell me, so I learned anyways. What they need to do to make it easyer is use more pic.'s be more suspific and brack the steps down

it took me about 10 minutes to do about 10 petals and the part about folding the petals was tricky. otherwise it was really easy. p.s if you cut the petals to a rounded look it looks more like a rose

this is wonderful you could also use a pencil instead of a straw since it's stronger, or you can sharpen the pencil and don't cover with duct tape and write with style (just have another eraser beacause the flower will the block the old one.)

I made something just like that except with different colors it was REALLY easy

it would be kinda complicated but i think i could make a flower but how can you decrate a vase or a vas

very fun cool

I found it hard to make the pedals. When I was making the pedals I messed up on step 3. I folded it over a little to much. If you're the kind of person who likes the mini footballs and uses your fingers for goal posts if you mess it up then you can do that. You fold all the edges over and snip of the extra and shazam it si done.

I've tried this. Its easy looks hard, but easy. i made it for my mom for her bday and mothers day. :)
