AVON, Ohio (April 2014) – From accessories to the entire ensemble, fashion choices make a statement and express one’s personality. For Radio Disney on-air personality Maddy of “Morgan & Maddy in the Morning,” fashion can be described as style that sticks ... literally. On April 26, Maddy will get ducked out for the 2014 Radio Disney Music Awards (RDMAs) – the prime awards show for kids and families’ music – by glamming up in a one-of-a-kind dress made with Duck® brand duct tape!
Designed by Michelle Lesniak, fashion designer and winner of “Project Runway” Season 11, over a period of nine weeks, Maddy’s custom couture dress is destined to be a perfect combination of glitz and glamour.
Lesniak calls it an “artful blend” of color and whimsy.
“The silhouette is based off of a traditional 1950s prom dress. The full skirted, boat neck, fitted bodice frock gets an updated twist with an artful ‘dripped paint’ effect using Duck Tape®,” explains Lesniak, who’s no stranger to working with Duck Tape®. “Duck Tape® is such a versatile crafting medium – I was only limited by my imagination in designing the perfect outfit for Maddy.”
Like any artist, Lesniak began Maddy’s dress design with a blank canvas – or in this case, muslin. Her tools: Galaxy, Black, White, Blue and Gold Duck Tape® – the latter paying homage to the golden ARDY® statue bestowed upon winners at the RDMAs. For added texture and a little sparkle, Lesniak also accented the design with Duck Glitter® and Duck Prism® crafting tapes.
Lesniak carefully cut strips of tape to resemble dripped or splattered paint, giving the piece a truly artistic touch. Upon completion, the dress required nearly 40 rolls of tape, three and a half yards of muslin and six crafting knife blades – plus, Lesniak admits “nearly 300 jelly beans and a dozen or so cups of coffee.”
“Fashion isn’t necessarily a new journey for Duck Tape® – for more than 14 years we’ve been challenging high school students across the U.S. and Canada to create Duck Tape® promwear in our annual Stuck at Prom®Scholarship Contest. But, it has definitely been an amazing journey filled with imagination and surprise,” said Ami DeWille, corporate trend and senior category manager, Duck Tape®, at ShurTech Brands, LLC, the company that markets the Duck® brand. “Michelle has a keen eye for fashion and a passion for working with Duck Tape®, which comes through in her designs. We’re excited to see Maddy unveil her custom attire and can’t wait to hear about her experience wearing Duck Tape®.”
Maddy will reveal her Duck Tape® dress at the Radio Disney Music Awards on April 26. “Disney Channel Presents The Radio Disney Music Awards,” a television special originating from the event, will air the following day, Sunday, April 27 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT).
